Weight & Purity of U.S. Coins

U.S. Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars, and Dollars dated 1964 and earlier are 90% pure Silver:

Dimes - Weight = 3.1103 Grams or 2 Pennyweights (DWT)
Quarters - Weight = 7.7759 Grams or 5 Pennyweights (DWT)
Half Dollars - Weight: 15.5517 Grams or 10 Pennyweights (DWT)
Dollars - Weight: 31.1035 Grams or 20 Pennyweights (DWT)

U.S. Half Dollars dated 1965 through 1970 are 40% pure Silver.

U.S. Half Dollars dated 1971 through 1974 with an "S" mint mark are 40% pure Silver.

The U.S. minted various Gold Coins between 1849 and 1933. Be sure to do your research, if you happen to run across one.

Please note: Before selling your Silver or Gold Coins for scrap prices, be sure to do a Google search for the coin, to ensure it is not rare and valuable. For example, a 1916D Mercury Dime will bring a premium price, usually upwards of $800, depending on condition.
